Director’s Notes

This was my third student film shot on mini DV. The idea of time travel has always fascinated me and I knew that I wanted to explore it eventually in one or more of my films. “Time Lapse” became my first. The idea kicked off with inspiration from a story my friend told me that involved a man time traveling and kicking a brick off of a building that hit himself in the past. The thought that someone could go to the past and unwittingly do something to cause their demise in the future really interested me. So I explored in this film the idea of someone so blinded by emotion and drive that they missed the important details in front of them.

I first used the idea for an assignment in my Photo/Storyboarding class where I had to create a photo series that told an overall arcing story. I expanded on the idea when I needed to make a short film in my Motion Picture Language class and used the photo series as storyboards. My instructor did not like the first rough cut of the film and wanted more back story on the criminal. So I hastily filmed and added a prologue to the final edit which ultimately gave me a better grade but left me unsatisfied with the film. When I went to put the film onto DVD, I recut it creating a “director's cut” that removed the tacked on prologue and reorder the scenes to finally make the film I had initial intended.
