Director’s Notes

This documentary was filmed at the same time as “Behind the Act” but was left dormant for four years. During my final semester at Academy of Art, I was editing together both “Behind the Act” and ”Living Dreams” and was unable to squeeze this film in before I left film school. So it sat on my shelf until I finally regain access to an editing system in 2007.

It was the most challenging of the three films to edit as it dealt with an entire concert versus just a single act. The film could have easily been feature length, but I knew I had to keep it in line with its predecessors. As I watched back through the hours of interviews I began to ask myself, what was the point of this trilogy. What was the heart and passion behind it? There was one word that kept coming up: friendship. This became the heart of the story and after editing it all together, “Behind the Lights” became the perfect conclusion to the “Behind the Mic” documentary trilogy.
